Psalms 126:1-3
When the Lord brought back the captives to Zion, we were like men who dreamed. Our mouths were filled with laughter, our tongues with songs of joy. Then it was said among the nations, “The Lord has done great things for them.” The Lord has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy.

The Bible has a lot to say about joy and laughter and the significance they play in the lives of God’s people. Realizing that “Joy” is a fruit of our recreated spirit according to Galatians 5:22. Laughter is a wonderful byproduct of joy that releases many benefits to our whole being- spirit, soul and body. Laughter that originates from the Lord is a tremendous blessing to us- Job 8:21, “He will yet fill your mouth with laughter and your lips with shouts of joy.” Yes God wants His children to laugh! The Lord really drove that point home for me when I saw a dad tickling his son while holding him in his lap.
Seeing them both laughing and enjoying each other was a living example of how the Father God gathers us into His lap and tickles us with holy laughter. The Lord strengthens His people through joy- Nehemiah 8:10, “…for the joy of the Lord is your strength.” It is proven both medically and Biblically that laughter promotes healing in our lives Proverbs 17:22, “A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.” Laughter is also a statement of faith, testifying to the Greater One inside of us, the mighty Holy Spirit- Job 5:22, “You will laugh at destruction and famine, and need not fear the beasts of the earth.”
Living the Spirit-Filled life is essential to reaching our full potential in Jesus Christ. The “New Wine” is a symbol of the Holy Spirit in the life of the believer- Matthew 9:17. At the Day of Pentecost, the 120 in the upper room were filled with the Holy Spirit. The casual observers assumed that they were drunk- Acts 2:13-16. Well what do drunk people in the natural do? They laugh and stumble while under the influence. Spiritual drunkenness is from God and likewise affects us in such a way that it can be easily misunderstood as natural intoxication. However, with the Holy Spirit overflowing in our lives, we have no fear, no cares, we are full of joy and laughter. Instead of a hang over the next morning we are full of strength and love.
Ephesians 5:18-20
Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit. Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
